As the Summer comes to a close, I am reminded about many moments in time. In August 2010, my husband of 7 years filed for divorce. In August 2011, I left Dallas and went to Austin. In August 2012, I didn’t get the job I wanted, so I moved into a small apartment in Park Cities and restarted my Real Estate business. In August 2013, I heard a heartbeat. In August 2014, I began a new life as a single mother. In August 2015, I decided to become a Commercial Broker and start a Property Management Company. In August 2016, … ???
I do know this is the calm before the storm though. After the Fall Term at SMU, I will have 9 more required credit hours and it is mapped out. Research Methods, Independent Study, and Foundations of American Legal Systems. I will take a few extra classes because I can.
Through this process I have acquired the necessary skills to volunteer my time at the Dallas County Dispute Resolution Center as well as SMU’s Dispute Resolution Center. I mediate 1 – 2 cases a month between the two locations. I’ve been to Geneva and obtained a completion certificate from the University of Southern California for Arbitration. Four (4) more simple hours of property tax law videos and I can apply to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts to be on their Arbitrator Registry for homeowners in the entire state who would like to dispute their property tax increase.
I guess what I’m really saying is adulting ain’t easy, but it happens. Life moves along. We must learn to be flexible, adaptable, resilient, and focused. It takes daily reflection. As I sit here typing, my tiny toddler is on my lap with his head on my shoulder, completely relaxed. I have the most hope filled heart I’ve ever had. It ain’t easy, but it is rewarding.
Good luck out there!
